Basic Java Setup

Basic Java Setup

When setting up or upgrading Java, follow these steps. For a more thorough technical walkthrough, see /wiki/spaces/SQSUPPORT/pages/690371.

Requirements

  • Java is compatible with Internet Explorer
  • Java is not compatible with Google Chrome
  • Java is not compatible with Microsoft Edge
  • Java is not compatible with Mozilla Firefox

For printing support in these non-Java browsers, see /wiki/spaces/SQSUPPORT/pages/1413452, but keep in mind that the SqBx settings for this are typically organization wide.

Download, Install, and Verify

  1. Go to java.com and click the "Download" button
  2. Allow the file to download and install
  3. Browse to Java.com/verify and allow the system to check.
    1. You may receive a blocking message, so look out for any of these
    2. The browser may be blocking Java from communicating with the printer. You will need to click “allow” on this “blocked” message to allow the browser and printer to communicate.

    3. Once Java is allowed in the browser make sure that the browser will remember this setting to keep these pop-ups from reappearing in the future.
    4. A pop-up from Java may also appear. Check the check box so that Java will remember to run each time and you will not have to keep manually running it.
  4. The checker should load for a few seconds and then tell you you have Java successfully installed and verify with you that you have the most up to date version.
  5. The verifier may also recommend that you uninstall old versions of Java, which is always best practice.

Printer Settings

If you've never set up your printer before, if you've made major changes to your computer, or if things just aren't working, it's a good idea to check if your printer is named correctly.

Our system ignores your "default printer" settings and prints to whatever printer has a name starting in "zebra".

  1. Open the start menu
  2. Type "printer"
  3. Select "Devices and Printers"
  4. Find your printer. A common name is ZDesigner GK420d
  5. Right click the printer and select "printer properties"
  6. Make sure the name starts with "zebra". A safe and common choice is to name it "Zebra Designer GK420d"
  7. You may need to select a "change properties" button here, depending on Windows security settings

Test & Troubleshoot

  • Once you've verified that Java is working, go into SqBx and test the label printing.
  • You can print a label from any package. "find package" is a good page to go to for finding a package when testing this.
  • If it prints, you're all set, if not, go to /wiki/spaces/SQSUPPORT/pages/1533729
  • If you're still having issues, restart your computer
  • If you're still having issues, please see the /wiki/spaces/SQSUPPORT/pages/690371
